12 Principles of animation

Squash and Stretch – This principle is talking about the push and pull of an object. For example, when a ball hits a wall, the part of the ball that hits the wall first stops while the opposite side is still moving, thus squashing the ball. With the built up energy of the squash, the ball returns to its original shape with a smaller force but is still enough to cause the ball to shoot out, thus stretching the ball.

Anticipation – This principle is to make the object seem like it is getting ready for something. for example, preparing to throw a ball or getting ready to catch one.

Staging – This principle is to allow the audience to know what is about to happen. For example, placing a football in the middle of a field with a soccer player behind it.

Slow in slow out – Principle is to make the actions of objects look more realistic. For example, in a bouncing ball. When the ball is dropped, it is slow at first but starts to get faster and faster. When it bounces back out, reaching the peak of its bounce height it will again slow down.

Below is a video of the principles of animation i found online.

Reflection – I think that what these principles are trying to do is it help animators know how to make their animation more realistic. These principles are movements that can be seen everyday but we hardly notice it. However it is also because of this principles that we see things more realistic in animation.
